Abstract

This article examines the major stages in the historical development of world linguistics, including ancient linguistic traditions, medieval linguistic scholarship, Renaissance humanism, comparative-historical linguistics, structuralism, generative linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, and modern computational linguistics.
